Title:Help! Foreigner with Hong Kong residential ID card to take domestic flight?
Post 1 Help! Foreigner with Hong Kong residential ID card to take domestic flight? Mar 24,08 09:48 PM
Hi, my boss is a French. Can he use his Hong Kong residential ID card to take domestic flight within China (say from Xi"an to Beijing), since his passport is being annually renewed now? He also has a China government issued "Foreign Expert Certificate". Is this one workable? Or does he have to get a kind of certificate letter of the passport somewhere? Who can help me? Urgent!! Many thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, I don"t think Hong Kong ID card is classified as an acceptable ID for taking domestic flights in mainland China.

I assume your boss normally resides in Beijing? If so, he should have already registered with the local police station as a rule that any foreigners reside in Beijing must go to the nearest police station to register within 48 hours? (maybe 72 hours, cannot remember exactly) once moved into the new accommodation (This rule does not apply to those who stay at hotels etc. since I think the hotels keep a record of all guests" personal details automatically).

If he has already registered with the local police station, and if I am in his shoes, what I will do is to take the Hong Kong ID card, foreign expert certificate and a photocopy of his passport (if he has one) to the local police station and get them to issue some sort of stamped official letter proving his existing registration with the local police station (with basic personal details such as name, date of birth, nationality, passport or other ID numbers etc. included in the letter), then what he can do is to take these supporting evidence to the airport police station and get them issue a "Temporary Flight Boarding Certificate" (Chinese name: Lin Shi Deng Ji Zheng Ming), he will then be able to use this certificate for the necessary airport procedures.

I asked my friend to ask security screening officers at both Beijing and Shanghai Pudong airports since he had a PVG-PEK trip the day before yesterday, and this is what he had been told: "Officially speaking, Hong Kong Residential ID Card is not accepted for domestic air travel in mainland China. You need to visit the airport police station to get a Temporary Certificate as per lingam"s post."
