The organisation responsible for promoting tourism along Western Australia's Coral Coast says cheap flights to South-East Asian destinations are making it increasingly difficult to lure visitors.

Figures released by Tourism WA reveal a 16 per cent drop in visitor numbers this financial year, compared with the same period last year.

Over the past three years, visitor numbers have dropped by nearly 13 per cent.

Australia's Coral Coast chief executive, David O'Malley, says regional tourism markets are suffering as a result of price cutting wars between airlines for flights to Bali.

"The strong Australian dollar has made overseas destinations extremely attractive and last year alone 170,000 West Australians went to Bali on a holiday because of the low cost carriers, the strong Australian dollar and the great deals that are being offered up there, so it's been pretty tough times all round in the last two to three years," he said.

Given the present valuation of Australian dollar, it doesn't surprise me that more Aussies would rather travel overseas.
