JetBlue has been ordered to pay US$600,000 for what the government said were violations of rules for handling disabled passengers and disclosing flight information to passengers.

The Transportation Department said on Dec. 13 that it acted after getting complaints that JetBlue Airways Corp. didn't provide required help such as wheelchairs, mechanical lifts, or ramps for disabled passengers getting on and off its planes.

The Transportation Department also said JetBlue failed to tell passengers that some flights would be operated by the airline's partner Cape Air instead of by JetBlue.

The airline said it did not have records to verify the complaints of disabled passengers, and that it will create a Disability Customer Care Center to make sure disabled passengers get the travel help they need.

The Transportation Department is allowing JetBlue to use US$250,000 of the civil penalty to pay for the efforts to improve its service for disabled passengers.

Nice to see that the government does care about the lack of necessary services and information disclosure by some air carriers.
