Air China will increase the number of flights it operates from Vancouver (YVR) to Beijing up to 12 from the current 10 weekly flights.

The new flights are scheduled to begin from March 27, 2011, the airline said in a news release.

The new flights will go on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 3 a.m., arriving into Beijing at 5:25 a.m. the following day. The returning flight will depart Beijing at 11:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving into Vancouver at 7:30 p.m. These are in addition to Air China's daily flights, which depart Vancouver at 12:50.

"The early morning non-stop departures that we launched in June of this year have been extremely popular with the Canadian and Chinese travelling public," David Solloway, Air China's senior advisor for Canada, said in a news release. "The morning arrival time into our hub at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA), allows for convenient connections to 92 domestic destinations in China, as well as 42 international destinations. This means an overnight stay in Beijing is not needed to fly directly to a final destination in Air China's route network.

"In addition, the ongoing encouragement we receive from the Provincial Government of B.C., the Vancouver Airport Authority and other tourism stakeholders across Canada helped make the decision to continue to expand our Vancouver to Beijing flights an easy one. The additional flights further boost British Columbia's successful Pacific Gateway strategy.

"The new flights will also facilitate the upsurge in Chinese tourists to Canada, following China granting Canada Approved Destination Status (ADS)."

B.C.'s Minister of Transportation Shirley Bond said the expansion shows that B.C. is a hub for international and air freight traffic.

"I applaud Air China's decision to increase service between YVR and Beijing," said Larry Berg, president and chief executive officer, Vancouver Airport Authority. "Asia-Pacific is our top growth region and it's encouraging to see Air China's commitment to Vancouver as a market, as well as to YVR as a gateway between North America and Asia."
